Severn Karate Dojo Testimonials

Training with Sensei Gerry at Severn Karate has been an amazing experience. Beginning with Little Dragons, my daughter enjoyed every part of the class. Each week she was proud of completing the lessons and excited to learn more. Now we train alongside one another which has allowed us to spend time together, take on new challenges, practice, build new skills and grow together. Severn Karate and Sensei Gerry have played a big part in our lives and personal development. My daughter’s level of confidence, leadership, drive to take risks and learn new things has grown considerably over the past year. These characteristics have been enhanced by her ability to see me take risks, be challenged and learn new things each week. The way you take the time to work with each student and walk through each element of learning is amazing and we cannot thank you enough!

A few years ago I was a parent looking to enroll my son in an activity that would teach him discipline, keep him active, and be included in group where he could meet new friends with common interests. My knowledge of martial arts was minimal, but thought it would be pretty cool for my son to take Karate.
As I watched Sensei Gerry teach my son how to do kata, how to defend himself, how to build strength and stamina, I found myself twitching in my seat until I finally mustered up the courage to give it a try. Little did I realize at the time, that karate is not just for kids, it is people of all ages and all walks of life.
Sometimes you don’t know what you’re looking for until you’ve found it. For me, it is the dojo. It’s training in a place that not only teaches the physical aspects of the art, it also has helped me build up my self-esteem, self-respect and confidence. It has taught me how to react to conflict whether it be in self-defense or with other life obstacles. It is stimulating, challenging, rewarding and so worthwhile to make time for you; meet wonderful friends and to be part of the family at Severn Karate Dojo.

13 years ago I started my martial arts journey. I was 39 years old and was going through some changes in my life. I needed something to fill a void in my life and I had always wanted to do try karate. I had the great fortune to meet Sensei Gerry Campbell and begin my training. The more I trained the more I became immersed in the martial culture. The focus on functional use has translated very well for me and my training has prevented me from being seriously harmed on at least 4 separate occasions. I have met some amazing practitioners and made some lifelong friends through literal blood sweat and tears. Hard training breeds results! The depth of knowledge only outshone by his passion for his chosen vocation. I have never met anyone as passionate about anything they love as Sensei Gerry! I look forward to many more years of training and the rewards reaped from hard work!

I started training with Sensei Gerry Campbell back at his previous dojo when I was 10 years old. My parents thought it was a good way to build confidence and learn independence. I had to take care of myself from 3pm when school was let out until they picked me up at 8, including eating and making my way across town to the dojo. I trained 3 or 4 days per week until it became second nature and I earned my Black Belt at the early age of 15. I was with a heavy heart when I left the dojo at 18 because it had become a part of me.
Although I wasn’t training anymore the karate training never left me. I can’t count the times the lawnmower spat a rock my way and a perfect highblock prevented a black eye, or when someone on the jobsite yells “heads up”, and far before the warning I had already ducked out of the way.
The time I thanked my training the most was when I was laying on the floor laughing after the stairs had collapsed in an old barn I was working on. During the 9 foot fall I could hear Sensei Gerry saying “Don’t reach for the floor, it’ll find you soon enough” and “chin-to- chest, you don’t want to wack your head”. Without any broken; wrists, elbows or collarbones and without concussion I stood up and immediately got back to work.
At some point after the thousands of hours of training, the karate starts to run in your veins. You can’t turn it off and it’s not about fighting, it just becomes a part of who you are.
I’m fortunate to be back training again (10 years later) and I have to tell you, get started, get your kids started, and get your friends started. Put in the hours because then Karate will be there for you too.

I have been training under the direction of Gerry Campbell for over thirteen years. When I was a child, I was a shy and often timid person so my parents decided to sign me up for karate to increase my confidence levels. To say my confidence levels have slightly increased would be an understatement. I now have no problem speaking in front of audiences and I always make sure to stand up for myself and what I believe in. Over the years, Gerry has taught me so much more than just how to practice the art of karate. His mentorship and the time I have spent at the dojo have positively molded me into the person I am today. He approaches every class with such a high level of dedication, knowledge, and expertise – providing every student the same opportunity to learn something new in each and every class. In addition to the high quality of instruction provided by Gerry, every member contributes to the spirited atmosphere I look forward to being a part of every class I attend. Over the past thirteen years at the dojo, I have made many friendships that will last a lifetime. These things have made the dojo so much more than just a location to train at.
I would highly recommend anyone looking for a fun yet educational and energetic yet disciplined place to practice martial arts to participate in a class at Severn Karate Dojo as they will get first hand experience seeing the type of devotion Gerry brings to his classes and everything the dojo has to offer.

My two children have been training with Sensei Gerry Campbell for more than 5 years. In

these years, they have grown in skill and confidence; in independence and self esteem. Sensei has been an integral part of this through their training with him. He has been consistent in mentoring, teaching, explaining and motivating. Not only does he know the name of each person on the floor no matter what size of class, he also has an ongoing nickname or joke with each child out there. In the words of my children:
"The dojo is more comfortable than ever....Sensei is nice and a good teacher."
"I have learned more than just karate from Sensei Gerry."
Life takes its twists and turns, but in the words of Dieter F Uchtdorf "It is your reaction to the adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life's story will develop."
We are so proud of your reaction. And of your persistence. We are so thankful to have been part of this first year at the new dojo. Here's to many more. Thank you.
Cheers.
